Letters to a Birmingham Jail: A Response to the Words and Dreams of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

I love the concept of this book - writing letters to MLK Jr in response to his Letter from a Birmingham Jail. The contributors, however, seemed to use this book as an opportunity to share about their lives and views which mostly only related to the quote about Sunday morning being the most segregated hour rather than addressing the full content of the letter. Their contributions were valuable; they just didn’t respond to King’s letter.One of the contributors, John Piper, even had the audacity to suggest that King didn’t include the gospel in his work enough, which is an indicator of unfamiliarity with King’s work and the history of the black church (particularly its leaders necessarily taking on greater responsibilities within the community) probably due to the insulation created by his white privilege.Had the contributors actually stuck to the premise, this book could have, should have, would have been amazing but instead it was average.

Reading this book really touched my soul. I discovered the title as it was mentioned in another book I was reading so I ordered it. I have found it very moving and educational. I am white, raised in Southern California and was a teenager during the segregation marches in the south. I spent little if any time considering the struggles of black people. Reading this book and other books like it has opened my eyes and made me ashamed of the majority race's treatment of minorities in genera,l but black people in specific. This book is very thought provoking.I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a desire to be a positive force in combating segregation.

Dr. Martin Luther King's ability to leave such a profound impact across our nation's diaspora that was during those times a very segregated nation. Rather with a march, speech or letter, could only be considered God inspired. Truly a "Modern day Apostle."

I wanted MLK's book, letters from a Birmingham Jail

I'm thankful for reading this book. It was the first time that I've ever read Dr. King's letter. Really helping me in perspectives, acknowledgements of injustice that not only happened during the civil rights era, but now. The men that responded to Dr. King's letter in this book were great to help see and understand what's going on now in our world. Still chewing on all of this.

A brilliant book! Following Dr. King's Letter from a Birmingham Jail, there are responses from discerning Christian leaders (black, Asian, & white) reflecting on their own experiences in the context of Dr. King's words. This is a must-read for any Christian serious about racial reconciliation.

This book pulls you out of your comfort zone and makes you think about attitudes buried deep within. If you let it, the Holy Spirit will help you recognize that you need to change and be part of the intentional church led effort to change our racial inequality.

Bryan Loritts and friends have brought Martin Luther King Jr.'s ministry and words back to life. They have honored Rev. King by remembering his dream. In this book we are reminded and shown that we are not there yet, his dream must now become our dream, as it is Gods vision. I pray for my brother Bryan Loritts and all who contributed to this testimony.
