Raw crystal quartz looks and feels like a chunk of glass, mainly because glass is made from fused quartz crystals that have been melted at a high temperature. The included purple amethyst also looks like glass because amethyst is a variety of quartz. If you were to polish the roughly hewn chunk of quart or amethyst, you would find a beautiful shine underneath, with some crystal grains visible (unless you received a remarkably clear chunk of crystal). Chunks of glass have will have what you call a marbling effect (spirals of convex shapes) because of the way the glass poured into a mold as it was still hot. Hope this helps. As for the red stone, the hardness level of it is softer, so you may actually be rubbing off tiny specks of red rock. If you were to break the rock in half, the center will be the same color and consistency as the outside.
