Basic C6th Nonpedal Lap Steel Method

Great great book and method. One caveat: it’s best if you already play guitar. I’m a trained and experienced guitarist who lost the dexterity of my left hand due to nerve damage. I can still hold a slide tho ‘. I already knew the picking (“grabs”), knew the fret positions and could already read tab. Without this knowledge this book might be overwhelming for a beginner. Buy a basic beginner book, first — then by all means buy THIS EXCELLENT book when you’ve got some skills with the basics.

This book has quite a few nice songs that I'm really enjoying playing. In terms of the instruction, it's all over the place. It goes over basic tablature/music notation, a little theory, and various aspects of lap steel playing. The problem is that a book of this size can't really cover all of those topics. I wish they just specified that you need to know the basics of guitar (e.g. recommend some basic text for that), and focus instead on lap steel. That way they could have more detail on lap steel technique. It's worthwhile but could be better.

Lots of hard to find C6 tab. Make music right away. Information can be used on many other pieces of music

I find it difficult to try and read any ebook while trying to do the lessons. I tried to print a couple pages but can't. It's next to useless to me.

I have been playing guitar since 1966 and G tuning dobro since 1971. I recently purchased a Fender six string lap steel and wanted to get "that sound", which requires a 6th tuning. This book is an adequate beginner's book, but doesn't provide enough information to get you comfortable with the tuning or to help the experienced player transfer their knowledge of theory to the tuning. For pedagogical purposes, it cannot compare to other books that I have used in the past, and may actually be a bit dated. I learned more from youTube videos and trial and error.

Got a lap steel for Christmas. Have played standard guitar for many years, but this is my first lap steel. The book covered a lot of basic music theory which I did not need. Had some illustrations and lots of practice exercises.

There are some neat arrangements of some traditional tunes in here an what appear to be some good licks and harmonized scales too. I particularly like the approachable arrangements of Wildwood Flower and Amazing Grace. This book has been helpful, especially since it has been difficult to find resources on C 6th tuning but I wouldn't recommend without some prior knowledge of music. Also the sequence of this book is kind of baffleing. The exercises are non-linear and appear to be in a random order, It would make a lot more sense to order them by difficulty or emphasizing each particular technique as it is learned. At one point slants are introduced (after the basic technical kind of instruction is long past) with a note to look up them up on a random page late in the book.The CD is really helpful to get a grasp on accents and timing, especially with faster passages but only covers the songs. Those tasty riffs aren't on the CD so you kind of have to try and pick them out from where they're thrown into the traditionals. All that being said there are still a lot of good gems scattered throughout, but the presentation makes them a bit difficult to find.

This book is good if you really want to play in C6th tuning. I thought I did, but I found it rather limiting and too old time country sounding. I prefer G tuning. There is some information about forming minor chords, but if you are looking for boxes or fretboard diagrams of minor chords, you are out of luck. Minor chords are presented in music terms, with an example of Dm in the tab, and the instruction to flat the 3rd to form other minor chords. I believe there are many people out there who know that you flat the third. It would be nice to have a diagram that shows you the basic locations instead of having to figure out where the third of a chord is located on the fretboard. After all, the minor chord formations form a pattern on the fretboard.

I have been playing electric and acoustic guitar for years now, and play a lot of slide/bottleneck stuff on there.I saw a reasonably priced lap steel guitar and bought one with the intention of teaching myself. I found the C6 tuning like nothing I had ever played in before, and the guitar sat in the box for several weeks.I had a look around for some tutorial books specifically for lap steel in the C6 tuning, which seems to be one of the most popular tunings used on country records (and gives the distinctive Hawaiian sound). I've only had this book a couple of weeks and already my playing has dramatically improved; it goes into some of the techniques used and starts off with simple exercises to get you used to using the instrument, tone bar and the tuning.I'm only a short way through the book, but listening to the accompanying CD, the last songs to learn in the book sound really good, so hopefully I will be able to master them and be able to play proficiently. So far I am happy - and the lap steel is out of the box and being played properly.I have knocked a star off for the accompanying CD, which seems to have some kind of fault so the first 16 or so tracks sound distorted and crackly. I got in touch with my seller, who got in touch with the publisher, who said that all the CDs were manufactured like this, and they didn't seem to be bothered about replacing them. My seller gave me a link to the publishers website though, and you can download an MP3 version of the CD, which i have done, and which sounds fine.Had the CD not been faulty, or had the publisher actually sent the seller a replacement to pass on to me I would have given it 5 stars, as it seems a great tool for anyone wanting to learn to play the lap steel guitar.Fully recommended.

I'm a professional musician, long time guitar player but new to steel and after a bit of wallowing around in open E tuning wanted to try C6 tuning as it seemed to be the basis for a lot of music played on lap steel. This book has the basics such as the actual tuning and suggested string gauges. It has some information on lap-steel specific techniques such as slants and blocking, but this is dispersed throughout the book in a rather haphazard way rather than being next to the exercises and pieces that introduce those techniques.There are some exercises and quite a few short pieces to get you started, in both Tab and standard notation, but they are fairly generic rather than specific to the instrument. There's a section on music theory as well. It's all similar in vein to old-style music tutor books such as the "Tune a Day" series.If you're new to music or playing stringed instruments this book will be great. For a musician picking up new instrument there is certainly enough material to get you going and start you thinking, but it's not particularly in-depth.I purchased this book specifically because it dealt with one tuning system, and I guess I'd hoped for something that had more examples of classic licks, patterns and exercises specific to this tuning. Nevertheless, I've found it useful.

As a beginner with some rudimentary music theory, it all starts good but from the 1st example of chords I identified incorrect chords which don’t correlate to the tabs. Example on page 13 C D and E chords, in the example, uses G7 C and F. Although the tabs are correct, for a beginner, this is very confusing and it’s like this on other pages.Whoever wrote this hasn’t proof read it.

very good book for the beginner who has no musical knowledge at all, it teaches you how to read music, at the same time as actually playing the lap steel. so you are using the lap steel from the beginning of the book, covers every thing you will need to become an accomplished player

billy ii have only perused this at the moment as a complete new learner i haven't reached the stage where i can do justice toto this yet although it is aimed at complete new comers and then some i'm practising very basic slides etc, but i can seeit will be brill for me shortly it is exciting as i progress it is great value for the price, if there is any easy country music forlapsteel i would appreciate knowing regards billy i.
