Miss Mayhem: a Rebel Belle Novel

This review originally appeared on herestohappyendings.comA few weeks ago I read and reviewed the absolutely fantastic Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins. It was one of those books that were on my list for ages, and I just never managed to get around to reading. After I read it, though, I couldn't understand what had taken me so long - I mean, it was absolutely fantastic, and I couldn't get enough of it. I flew through that book so quickly I probably could have read it three times in the normal amount of time it takes me to read a book.If you want to read my review for Rebel Belle, go and check it out. Otherwise you might run into some spoilers in this review that you might not have seen coming if you didn't read the first book (I hate giving things away in books, so I try to keep things as spoiler free as possible, but you know, I warned you!).“Honestly, not enough people know how to use good manners as a weapon.”Rebel Belle left off with Harper and David (and Ryan) getting used to their new powers as Paladin, Oracle, and Mage. After the whole incident at Cotillion, the three of them are starting to figure out how to manage to keep things going smoothly without too much of an issue (aside from the slight awkwardness between now exes Harper and Ryan). However, that starts to change one night when Harper goes into a party to rescue Harper's friends from a bad situation that David had a vision about - and from there, things go downhill. Bee is still missing, but soon to be recovered when Harper, David, and Ryan come across a strange house with an even stranger man inside - an Ephor, who wants to make David's visions even stronger than they already are. Not to mention the fact that even though Harper is getting used to her Paladin powers and now this guy wants to throw in that she has to go through trials to officiate her status as David's Paladin. Not too thrilled with this, she is even less thrilled when the Ephor brings out Bee, who was kidnapped, and is threatened with either completing the trials successfully or dying...and if you remember, Bee is still a Paladin, so he tosses that in Harper's face, too (a spare Paladin!).Feeling a bit out of her element (and admittedly pretty terrified at the daunting surprise tasks ahead of her), Harper confides to her aunt Jewel - the only person she has told anything to aside from Ryan and Bee.“Aunt Jewel, I just told you that I have superpowers. That my current boyfriend is an Oracle, and my ex-boyfriend is more or less a wizard. And you want to do a little shopping? I’d hoped you wouldn’t freak out, don’t get me wrong, but I expected some freaking out.”Still feeling a little...intimidated by everything that's going on, we also have another Mage after them - her name is Blythe, and she is trying all sorts of tricks to get to David, but as usual, Harper is protecting him the best she can.Making a decision to compete in the Miss Pine Grove pageant with Bee in order to try and stop the horrible vision that David had from coming true (and maybe catch Blythe), Harper must face the other trials as well as compete in the pageant - and if she loses, she can no longer be David's Paladin.Miss Mayhem was really good, but it didn't really have the awesomeness that Rebel Belle had. Yes, it was great, and Harper was the same kick-ass, well-mannered, profanity filtering heroine that we know and love, but it just didn't have the amount of oomph that the first book had. Still, if you liked Rebel Belle, the you absolutely must read this one, too, because it picks right up where the first book left off.I got really sad at the end of the book, and while I'm not going to ruin my spoiler free review here, I was disappointed that the author chose to end the book this way. It was kind of heartbreaking, and I really wished it could have gone differently, but at the same time, it leaves a lot of room for the third and final book, Lady Renegades, to complete the story. I really do hope it has more of an uplifting ending than this installment, though. I'm really glad that I waited to read this book right after Rebel Belle and right before Lady Renegades, otherwise I probably would have forgotten all the stuff that happened in this one.While this is a bit lackluster compared to the first book in the series, the characters are all back and it's nice to spend more time with all of them. There's still tons of action going on, so no need to worry about missing out on that.

This. This is why I tried my hardest to wait to binge the Rebel Belle trilogy, and upon learning that Rachel was coming to St. Louis later this month, I failed miserably in that endeavor. Needless to say I NEED Lady Renegades NOW!!!!Miss Mayhem was yet another delightful read by the fabulously talented Rachel Hawkins! We once again join in the Paladin/Oracle/Mage adventures of Harper, David, and Ryan. Like being a trio with your current boyfriend and ex-boyfriend isn’t hard enough, Harper is about to undergo some serious trials that she will either live through, or die from!The Ephors still want David and when one, Alexander, approaches the trio and tells Harper about the tasks ahead of her, there really is no choice for her but to endure them. On the plus side, Bee was released from her capture and is back with Harper and everyone else. Bee is still a Paladin though, since David never took her powers back as well.For awhile, we have a wait and see game as we wait for Harper’s trials to begin. There’s a little bit of downtime again, and this time, Harper and Bee decide to fill it by joining the beauty pageant their town holds, and it’s pretty much like Cotillion almost, except with a talent portion and naturally, the contest aspect.I will say we have a far more amount of drama in this one. Ryan is having his own set of relationship issues that seem to span quite a bit of pages. And then, naturally, we start to see a divide between Harper and David. Where trilogies are concerned, it always seems like there are major issues in book 2 to be overcome in the final book for that HEA ending. And I am expecting an HEA ending, Rachel! Don’t let me down girl!As I said, the pacing slows down a bit in this one. The relationship issues soon become the focus point, but not in a juvenile sense. It’s hard to say what exactly, without getting near spoiler territory, but let’s just say things don’t come into clearer focus until the end. And it’s that ending, that freaking ending that pretty much undid me. That nagging little voice in my head that told me, I should’ve waited! And really, the cliffhanger isn’t that bad. Really, it’s low on the scale of unbearable cliffhangers. But I think it’s the fact that we have a cliffhanger at all that drove me crazy!I feel like also, in this one, that we didn’t have nearly enough David and Harper time. I guess it’s because of the eventual drama issues that ensue. But I was hoping for more happy times with them.While the ending wasn’t high on the shocking scale, there were still a few smaller shocks to be had in that ending! And they’re just nagging enough to drive me crazy for the next few weeks! I am itching to know what happens to everyone!The series so far has been pretty fun! A little clichéd in some ways, and I still dislike that we lost our “Giles” for the series, because we now basically have teenagers running about with no clue or direction. Though, now they have one at the end, but still. Giles always gave Buffy and her friends direction, purpose, he was a token of knowledge and all that, a mentor and friend! Harper and her friends are lacking that, but they still manage to get by. I just thought a “Giles” would’ve been nice for them!This is a fun, quirky little series that I highly recommend if you’re looking for a feisty little read with some pretty good action, sweet romance, endearing friendships, and just a touch of mystery! This is a trilogy you won’t want to miss, consider binging it all in three-ish weeks! ;)Overall Rating 4/5 stars

Rebel Belle was one of my favorites of last year, so it's no guess that I was desperately waiting for this one. I just knew it would be filled with adventure and mayhem and the wit and sarcasm that only Hawkins can bring. Although it wasn't as good as the first, there was something that kept me tied to this book. Miss Mayhem starts exactly where Rebel Belle left off. Coalition is over and things are starting to get back to normal (well as normal as can be) and Harper is beginning to get back to what she's always done: EVERYTHING she can. But unfortunately, her Paladin powers don't go away just because she wanted them to. Instead she gets word that the Ephors now want to train David.... Sadly, I wasn't as big a fan of this one as I was of the first one. In the first one there was so much action and adventure going on and I just couldn't put it down. In this one, there was still some of the action and things going on, but it just didn't hang on to me like the first one did. I hadn't wanted to put Rebel Belle down, but with this one, I just read it like "I'll finish it when I get to it." Not that it wasn't memorable, just that it wasn't quite as good. In other words, to me it was the dreaded sophomore novel. I also wasn't a huge fan of that ending. What in the world made you think that was ok, Hawkins? Does that mean there will be three books? Because that was just a weird thing to do. I can't tell whether or not there will be more or if it's just over now. And that bugs me. I don't know if I should stop looking forward to something else or to just give up. PLEASE give me another one. Although this wasn't my favorite, it was certainly a quick, fun read. If there's not a third book, I'm sure I will definitely read this series again and again.

"Miss Mayhem" the second book in the "Rebel Belle" trilogy, Bee Franklin whisked away after the Cotillion by Blythe a Ephor mage is still missing when David, Harper and Ryan are summoned to a mysterious house in Pine Grove to meet Alexander who not only wants to train the Oracle but insists that his Paladin be tested in the Peirasmos. If Harper succeeds and isn't killed in one of three trials that will test her body, mind and spirit, Bee will lose her Paladin powers and return to a normal life while she will becomes quicker and stronger, able to fulfill her duty to protect David.In a plot that has Harper competing in the Miss Pine Grove pageant while undergoing two of the tests, breaking up with her "boyfie'" and losing her best friend to her ex-boyfriend, the emotional intensity never stops as she confronts her worst fears and turns to her Aunt Jewel for guidance. The dialogue is natural and the antics of Harper and her friends humorous at times. As events unfold tension boils to overflowing when Harper accidently finds Bee kissing Ryan, finally exploding in a tussle onstage when her best friend tries to stop her from leaving the pageant to follow David. Short in length with few details about the mysterious Ephor, and only the odd twist to the storyline, the climax leaves the reader uncertain about David's future.But, the strength of this novel lies in its characters which are fascinating, and complex as they struggle not only with life as teenagers in Pine Grove, but with their unnatural powers. David the smart, resourceful editor of the high school newspaper has little confidence, over thinks everything and constantly frets. In contrast his "girlfie" Harper Price is overconfident, bossy, controlling, but optimistic, trying to make everything better for everyone. Even though she's determined and never gives up, Harper quickly learns she can't manipulate fate, make decisions for David or control the emotional ups and downs of being a Paladin. Of the other personalities that heighten the intensity of the drama; Bee Franklin's fun-loving, caring and dependable; Ryan loyal, stubborn and easy-going; and Alexander charming secretive and manipulative.I liked "Miss Mayhem" a delightfully engaging novel with plenty of romance, mystery and adventure; a page-turner from beginning to end. With Harper questioning David's decision and her role as his Paladin at the end I look forward to reading the third book

La estética del libro es todo lo que espere, no es un perfecto 10 ya que es un libro bastante atrasado ya que no hay versiones en español y casi nadie lo vende en México, llegó bastante bien. Y es un libro que tiene mucho que quiero leer por recomendación de alguien.

Esse livro não foi tão bom quanto o primeiro. Rebel Belle tem a seu favor o fato de ser novidade, da mistura da vida da Harper com suas novas habilidades ser algo que ela ainda está descobrindo. Miss Mayhem já não tem isso, então eu esperava que a autora tivesse criado um enredo um pouco mais complexo e profundo para compensar. Mas, infelizmente, não foi assim.O problema do enredo no primeiro livro nem chegou a me incomodar tanto, mas eu comecei a ficar um pouco irritada com esse já. Além de que parece que é tudo muito incerto e de ter alguns buracos em algumas coisas, a história dá a constante impressão de não estar indo para lugar nenhum. Os problemas não convencem tanto, e parece que a própria autora não tinha muita certeza sobre o "mundo" que ela criou. O final, por outro lado, é um pouco melhor (como foi no primeiro livro), mas ainda achei corrido e não consigo imaginar como a história vai conseguir correr no último livro.A melhor parte da história continua sendo a Harper e o David e a relação dos dois juntos. Gostei bastante de ver os altos e baixos, principalmente os momentos mais fofos, mas infelizmente isso não foi o suficiente para melhorar o resto do livro.Vou ler o terceiro, claro, já que ainda quero um final feliz para essa história, mas já estou com aquela sensação chata de ver uma ideia incrível não chegar nem perto do seu potencial!

The book came a little dirty, which I wasn't impressed by. but the price for the book itself is quite cheap and other than that the book is in good condition. Just would have preferred a clean book as I have OCD and stuff like that bothers me.

BuchgestaltungIch hab mich inzwischen an das Cover gewöhnt, aber so super gefallen tut es mir nicht. Was ich besonders blöd finde ist, dass der Buchrücken total anders gemacht ist, als der von Band eins. So ein bisschen Zusammengehörigkeit beim Design – Da könnte der Verlag schon drauf achten. Der Titel passt auch nicht wirklich, denn die Miss-Wahl spielt im Buch keine all zu große Rolle. Alles in allem ist die Aufmachung aber in Ordnung. Es gibt weitaus schlimmere, finde ich.MeinungEhrlich gesagt, weiß ich gar nicht, wo ich anfangen soll. Ich habe jetzt insgesamt sechs Bücher von Rachel Hawkins gelesen und Miss Mayhem ist definitiv das schlechteste. Nicht nur, schlecht, wahrhaft unterirdisch. Schon als ich angefangen habe zu lesen, hatte ich so ein fettes Fragezeichen im Kopf, das war nicht mehr normal. Wo ist ihr Charme hin? Ihr Humor? Ehm...die Logik?!!ACHTUNG: AB HIER KOMMEN SPOILER FÜR DAS GESAMTE BUCH!!...Die CharaktereHarper war im ersten Band einfach wunderbar! Sie war klug, schlagfertig und witzig und ich habe sie einfach nur geliebt. Hier? Hier war Harper ein Schatten ihrer selbst. Sie hat Gewalt unbegründet eingesetzt, hat ihre Freunde wie Dreck behandelt und ihr ganzes Leben war ihr s***** egal. Dabei hat die Autorin es sich nicht nur super leicht mit Erklärungen gemacht, sondern eigentlich kaum etwas wirklich begründet. Zum einen gäbe es da Harper Eltern, die eindeutig merken, das etwas mit Harper nicht stimmt, aber es gibt genau zwei Szenen, die aus vier Sätzen bestehen, in denen Harper diese mirnichtsdirnichts mal eben überzeugt. Das Buch hatte nicht nur in dieser Hinsicht Schwachstellen. Ich habe Harper kaum wiedererkannt. Alles, wofür sie vorher gestanden hat, hat hier nichts mehr gezählt. Sie redet nur noch von David hier und David da. Und dann ist gegen Ende noch so etwas passiert, was ich total absurd fand. Harper und David schlafen nämlich miteinander. Nicht, dass diese Szene irgendwie graphisch dargestellt war, eigentlich konnte man das nur erahnen, aber nach 2 Wochen (dieser Zeitraum wird am Ende des Buches noch mal verdeutlicht) haben die beiden Sex? Vielleicht liegt es nur an meinem eigenen Empfinden, aber ich dachte nur: WAS?!David war im ersten Band recht sympathisch. Er hatte ein paar flotte Sprüche auf den Lippen, hat Harper zur Weißglut getrieben und gerade diese Spannung fand ich super amüsant. In Miss Mayhem ist er ein richtiger Nebencharakter. Außer Harper jedes Mal zu küssen, wenn die beiden gerade keinen Bock haben zu reden oder mal ne Lösung für ihre Probeme anzustreben, hockt er nur wie ein Emo in der Ecke und hat seine komischen Visionen, die einfach mal NULL zum Plot beigetragen haben. David hat sich richtig in die tragische Rolle des Orakels hineingesteigert. Das Leben ist s******, ich muss alle von mir wegstoßen, ich werden sterben – buhu, du Pussy!Mich hat das echt richtig, richtig wütend gemacht, ich finde kaum Worte.Die Nebenfiguren hatten auch einen Dachschaden. Da gäbe es zum einen Ryan, der vorher noch recht nett war und von dem ich geglaubt habe, man würde ihn hier mal näher kennelernen. Pustekuchen. Obwohl er und Harper jahrelang glücklich waren, benimmt er sich wie ein s***** Egoist und will Harper wie ein bockiges, kleines Kind nicht helfen. Und die beste Freundin Bee? Tjaaa, die dumme Kuh, fängt dann auch gleich mal was hinter Haper Rücken mit Ryan an.Ich hatte irgendwie schon erwartet, dass zwischen den beiden was abgehen würde, weil das in so Büchern ist, aber hätte die Autorin das nicht auf eine schöne Weise regeln können? Wieso musste man denn so ein Messer-in-den-Rücken-Drama noch einbauen? Bee war eh der oberflächlichste Charakter der ganzen Sippe und ich wollte sie jedes Mal ohrfeigen, wenn sie etwas gesagt hat.Dann gab es einen neuen Charakter, nämlich Alexander, der ein Ephor ist und den Freunden einfach so hilft, ohne groß Motive zu haben. Er kam mir fast so vor, als habe er ne gespaltene Persönlichkeit, denn im einen Moment will er den Freunden helfen und am Ende des Buches will er dann plötzlich alles kaputt machen, weil er ja der letzte Ephor ist. Er hatte auch einfach keine wirklich durchschlagene Eigenschaft. Da hätte man auch eine Tonfigur an seiner Stelle hinstellen können. Keine Ahnung, was die Autorin sich dabei gedacht hat. Vielleicht wollte sie, nach dem ja irgendwie alle vernünftigen Erwachsenen ausgeschieden sind, wieder jemand älteren haben, der die Handlung etwas lenkt. Alexander saß aber lieber in seinem Haus herum und hat Harper und David ein bissen mit mysteriösen Gelabber auf Trab gehalten – Übrigens war davon auch nichts wirklich Plot relevant.Die HandlungJa, wo war die denn bitte? Mal ehrlich, dass Buch hat schon so viel weniger Seiten, als der erste Teil und nach dem Klappentext hätte eigentlich folgendes kommen müssen: Spannende Trials UND eine richtig coole Miss Wahl...und was bekommen wir davon? NADA. Die Trials die Harper durchlaufen muss sind lächerlich. Es sind nicht einmal richtige Aufgaben, sondern inszenierte Mini-Überfälle auf Davids Leben z.B. in der Schule durch den Direktor. Da ist nix mit Popcorn schnappen und zurücklehnen. Ich hab mich die meiste Zeit einfach nur super gelangweilt und durch die Seiten gequält, während ich gebetet habe, das mal was passieren sollte. Zumal am Ende des ersten Teils doch so viel fette Action abging...ich habe fest damit gerechnet, dass wieder irgendwer David nach dem Leben trachtet und ein bisschen Blut fließt und so. Nein, lieber Teenie-Drama hier und da. Und es war nicht mal amüsant. Die Autorin ist einfach verdammt wenig auf die Gefühle der Figuren eingegangen. Teilweise gab es nicht mal Sätze zu Harpers Gedanken oder Gefühlen, sondern nur eine nüchterne Beschreibung. Damit hatte sich dann eine „swoon-würdige“ Romanze auch gleich erledigt. Zwischen Harper und David war einfach die Luft raus.Die LogikKommen wir jetzt zu dem Part meiner Rezension, der mich kirre gemacht hat. Logik ist ja immer ein definierbares Wort, aber meiner Ansicht nach hat Rachel Hawkins beim Schreiben des Buches einfach zu wenig nachgedacht. Hier sind nur ein paar meiner notieren Fragen/Stellen, die einfach so übergangen wurden bzw. im Buch standen und als Handlung durchgehen sollten.1) David schlägt vor, dass Bee Paladin wird, denn diese Option wird sozusagen angeboten. Er will, dass Harper und er ein „normales“ Leben dadurch führen können, aber wie zur Hölle sollte das Leben der beiden normal werden, wenn er immer noch Orakel ist? Und außerdem würde Bee den beiden fett an der Backe kleben und dazu kommt, dass Bee David hasst.2) Bee wurde am Ende von Rebel Belle entführt und zwischen den Bänden vergehen genau zwei Tage, bis man die verlorene Freundin wiederfindet. Später wird aber erwähnt, dass Alexander Bee trainiert hat. Sie ist nämlich in einer Übung sogar besser als Harper. A) Ist so etwas in zwei Tagen nicht möglich, weil Harper auch noch Paladin Magie hat und b) Wenn man entführt wird und jemanden einem was von Magie erzählt, dann denkt man doch der Kerl ist irre und lässt sich nicht trainieren oder?3) Alexander tritt einfach so auf den Plan, als eine Vision David und Harper zu Bee führt. Es gibt einen kurzen Dialog, der aber nicht erklärt, wieso die Freunde Alexander vertrauen, denn das tun sie. BAM ist er da und BAM tun sie, was er sagt. Ohne mal zu hinterfragen, was der Kerl eigentlich will. Allgemein hat mir im Buch mega so was wie „Recherche“ gefehlt. Die Suche nach anderen, die über das Orakel Bescheid wissen, einen geheimen Orden etc. bla bla, was es halt in solchen Stories immer gibt und alles mehr Sinn gemacht hätte, als einfach einen neuen Charakter hinzustellen, der tut, als wäre er allwissend.4) Alexander ist es auch, der aufgrund seines Daseins als Ephox Harper und David dann mal eben zu den Trials nötigt. Es wurde auch nicht erklärt, wie genau das alles abläuft, außer, das Harper sterben muss, wenn sie es nicht schafft. Im Prinzip holt sie sich nach jeder Rettungaktion nen Stempel für ihre Paladin Karte bei Alex ab. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaas? Ich habs null gecheckt. NULL. Wo er herkam, wieso er die Macht dazu hatte, wieso er sich nicht schon in Band eins eingeschaltet hat, seine ganze Verbindung zu allem und jedem.5) Die Visionen von David waren wage und unnötig. Es wird immer nur gesagt: Der Junge hat Visionen und das war es. Auf Fragen wie: Was hast du gesehen? Wird nie eingegangen. Stattdessen verpisst sich David am Ende des Buches und Harper ist nicht einmal sauer auf ihn.6) Dann gabs da eh noch die ganze Wende zum Schluss. Ryan und Bee hintergehen Harper, um David zu helfen, damit er abdüsen kann. Anstatt mal vernünftig nen Plan zu schmieden, wenden sich die Menschen, die Harper am längsten in ihrem Leben kennt wieder (man erinnere sich an die Knutsch-Szene) gegen sie. Mit der tollen Begründung „es ist besser so für euch“, genau, weil Reden ist ja böse und Konflikte lösen auch, deshalb lügen und betrügen wir mal weiter.FazitIch bin wirklich maßlos enttäuscht von diesem Mittelband. Vermutlich lese ich die Reihe noch zu Ende, aber ich sollte vorher echt mal beten, dass Rachel Hawkins von ihrer Lektorin dieses Mal nen fetten Arschtritt bekommen...ich hätte niemals gedacht, dass ich einem ihrer Bücher eine so niedrige Wertung geben müsste. Erst mal in die Ecke eine Runde weinen. Außerdem tut sich jetzt wieder das Problem auf: Empfehle ich die Reihe weiter? Ich liebe Band eins, aber es zieht immer mächtig runter, wenn die Story dann so absackt. Band drei wird wohl zeigen, ob ich dann noch sagen kann: Führt euch diese Reihe mal zu Gemüte.
