May works well, has some drawbacks
I bought this specifically because of the flashing LED, thinking that if the cat learns to associate the blinking light with being shocked, I can eventually just use a flashing LED (resistor-capacitor or 555 timer) circuit and place them where I don't want the cat to be.The mat works well but has a slight delay and beeps when it shocks. I wish I had known this because it may defeat the purpose of my original intention. I might remove the beeper manually so the association is with the LED and not the beeper. It's also odd that the low setting has a red LED and the medium and high settings both use a green LED. Both LEDs are VERY bright - quite annoying if you are trying to read, watch tv, or pretty much do anything in the area of the mat.Regular batteries last about 6 weeks for me.

The mats are easy to use
I have two cats. One was scratching at my and my kids' doors at night to sleep with us. The other scratched my door relentlessly in the morning for food. We bought 2 mats, after attempting other methods of discouraging the cats from scratching. The mats are easy to use. The low shock is not very strong, but it's still very effective at getting the cats to avoid the doors. In fact, the cat must step twice quickly on the mat to get a shock, and the cat gets a beep warning if he steps once on it. So the mats deter in several ways, not just the gentle zap. I would give these mats a 5 for simplicity and solving my problem, but the 30 inch is shorter than the average door width. My cats squeezed in next to it and scratched! So now I have to put a mat, plus some other items on the side to create obstacles. I feel like a crazy person doing this, and I'm annoyed that I have to. The mats come in 60 in length too, but that's too wide for a doorway. If your cats are waking you up repeatedly at night, causing you to be grouchy during the day, get a mat. Or two. Just be prepared with a little barracade too!

Works quite well
This works quite well. The one thing I don't like about it is that there's a flashing light that indicates that it's working and it is really annoying. As far as I can tell from the instruction manual, which is quite brief, there's no way to turn off flashing light.

i think my cat knows that the blinking light means don't go. lol hubby put it under the bed (without me knowing) and i stepped on it . all i could say was F U hubby. lol it's really not that bad, just a slight jolt.

works like a dream...no cat in the middle of my stove every morning and even if i don't use the mat and just use the blinking charger, they are now conditioned to steer clear of anything that blinks. problem solved!!
