The ring was awarded by Heinrich Himmler to the Schutzstaffel (SS). These rings were a personal gift not a state decoration. At first it was a symbol of the high ranking officers of the Old Guard (of which there were 4873). They had shown exceptional courage and prowess in battle, and the officers had a clean disciplinary record. Even for minor infractions the ringbearers were obliged to return their ring.
