If using an iPhone (and probably true also for Android auto) you don't need to install anything on your phone. AFAIK you must install the autokit apk on your android head unit - this seems to be mandatory for CarPlay at least (and I guess also for Android auto). You can install to the head unit directly from the dongle I believe, via Google play store (I personally used the play store) and via the URL provided on the Amazon product page.
