How does it measure altitude ?

Hi Jim - the Weather Pro calculates altitude based on atmospheric pressure.  The unit has a sensor to measure pressure and then calculates altitude based on that measurement.

Question 2

Does this have a belt clip, and would it work adequately on a belt?.  Would like to use it as field supervisor at soccer games.

Hi, the Weather Pro comes with a wrist strap that is attached to the back of the unit.  While we don't have a belt clip on the Weather Pro, you could use carabiner with the wrist strap to fasten it to your belt.  It would also make easier to look at the display without having to remove it from your belt.

rechargeable batteries go bad after year around daily use, so is the rechargeable battery replaceable with this $400,- device?

The key determination for Li-poly batteries is the number of charging cycles and not the age of the battery specifically.  In general, a heavily used and charged battery will degrade in a shorter calendar time than a battery that is not used as heavily.  This is true for mobile phones, tablets, cameras, etc.  The life cycle of a specific battery pack is determined by its size, design (including safety circuitry) and the current draw of the device the battery is used in.  The INO Weather Pro was specifically designed with these parameters in mind.  It uses a very low current microprocessor and the charging circuit design was developed to maximize both the use time and charging efficiency to preserve battery life.  The battery is rated by the manufacturer for over 300 charging cycles with power greater than 80% capacity.  Our testing shows that the Weather Pro will last over 17 hours per cycle, so the Weather Pro will last longer than 5100 hours of use.  That is more than 10 years if you use the device 500 hours per year.

Can this be used for general mountaineering forecasts?

Hi, thank you for the question about mountaineering forecasts.  The Weather Pro is a great device for measuring weather conditions and with its logging function can track weather changes over time for each of the 7 functions it measures (temp, humidity, pressure, lightning strikes, etc.).  Since the Weather Pro only provides data it measures it does not have the capability to give you a forecast directly.  For that, you would need to rely on a forecasting service like NWS or local news.  But forecasts need the data provided by the Weather Pro so it can assist by providing that data and showing you changes over time.  If you have the expertise and experience you may be able to use this data to estimate conditions in the future.  For example, when the pressure goes down it is an indicator that a low-pressure system is coming in, which can indicate a storm coming towards you.  Using the temperature history, humidity, and dew point you can estimate if there is precipitation will it be snow or rain.  I hope this helps answer your question.
