Endeavour S1-9: Collector's Edition [DVD]

Genius crime series, magnificently acted, and written. A must -see.
This nine - season show represents some of the best writing and acting of any crime show I've seen, and it's my favourite genre. All episodes were written by Russell Lewis, and because of this, and the man's talent, the arcs of all of the main characters are subtly and beautifully developed over the entire nine year run. In addition, each 90 minute episode is actually a movie in scope, pacing and complexity. Three mysteries convolve in each, and are skilfully woven into the character development. A tour de force of writing and concept. Shaun Evans as the brilliant (and possibly slightly autistic, but very likeable) Endeavour Morse is subtle, sympathetic and in my book, gives us a master class in acting. Roger Allam as Fred Thursday, his mentor/father figure is equally remarkable - subtle, solid, layered. The sense of period (mid sixties to late seventies) is pitch perfect, and the Oxford setting and the use of classical music make it elegiac. Altogether a transporting journey. If you love the genre you will not be disappointed. It is simply riveting, and subtle enough to be enjoyed multiple times. I'm on my third viewing now, and still finding new things. Genius.

Great series
I can't fault the series which is an excellent addition to the other "Morseworld" shows. I bought this as a gift for my partner at Christmas. As she has hearing difficulties she somewhat relies on subtitles. The very first disc which contained the pilot episode would not play at all, even after trying it on other machines! Discs two and three were ok but after that (at least as far as we've gone) the subtitle option seems to be stuck on "off" and nothing will shift it. I had to buy the first disc again (very cheap) to see the pilot. Despite these manufacturing faults I rate the series very highly as entertainment..

Best of all the "Morse" titles
Mrs G and I have thoroughly enjoyed every episode of Endeavour. Writing and cast superb in every episode with Endeavour played brilliantly by Sean Evans. Many nods to John Thaw and the original Morse series which fans will spot immediately, but not an issue if you start here.We wish there could be more, but will make do with this perfectly crafted series.

Faulty discs
Very disappointed. Does not play properly. Tried several discs and found same problem. Some don’t even play at all. Tried on another dvd player but no change. I shall be returning this product.
