Tips from a real pro
I bought Fares's book because I've seen him swim (and win!) in open water competitions. He has a strong, powerful stroke and the book really plays up how to get that. He makes the point that the best way to become a stronger swimmer is to keep focusing on your stroke, that's it less important to focus on getting strength from lifting weights. The book also channels Fares's overall positive energy, which you can see from his swimming videos, too.

Encouraging but no-nonsense
As a lifelong swimmer looking to break past my plateau, this, surprisingly, gave me exactly what I needed. Concise, clear advice I could implement right away. I liked how each tip was actionable, not just motivational fluff. The sections on minimizing drag and adjusting technique made an immediate difference in my lap times. What really stuck with me, though, was the mindset piece. Especially the part about ditching perfectionism and focusing on progress. That shift alone changed how I approach both training and competition. The writing feels like a coach is talking directly to you, encouraging but no-nonsense.

Former Competitive Swimmer Making a Comeback
Coming back to the pool after 22 years out—and a body that doesn't quite glide through the water like it did when I was 17—is humbling. There’s the muscle memory, sure, but also the aches, the breathlessness, the frustration that your mind remembers 100 fly splits but your body laughs at the idea. This book felt like a reassuring, energetic coach handing me a laminated checklist of both encouragement and practical tools. It doesn’t try to reinvent the freestyle flip turn or bore you with textbook science. Instead, it speaks directly to swimmers—real swimmers—whether they’re on deck for the first time, grinding through daily doubles, or, like me, a little creaky but fired up to race again. What makes this book special is how it breaks things down into actionable tips: technique cues, dryland exercises, mindset hacks, gear suggestions—each one digestible and low-pressure. I appreciated how it doesn’t assume you're training intensely 10, 20 hours a week. Instead, it meets you wherever you are, whether that’s lane 1 with a masters group or kicking off rust alone in a local Y.And most important of all, it reminded me why I loved this sport in the first place. It’s not just about swimming faster—it’s about re-learning how to be in the water with purpose, how to challenge your limits without wrecking your shoulders, and how to find joy in the grind again. This book didn’t just motivate me—it made the overwhelming goal of "getting back in shape" feel like something I could break into 101 manageable strokes.
