Q: can i apply this on it's own, without also using glue?

The tape does have a sticky bit which adheres to the underside of the carpet runner but the glue does help it become more stable. I have never done anything like this before but it is simple to use and the runner looks great with the edging on.

Q: I’m in the UK and an nervous about purchasing incase the colour is not quite right. Can I return the item free of charge?

The gluing is to minimise fraying of the carpet. If the carpet is woven I don't think it would be vital but if tufted, I think it is wise to use a glue gun; an ordinary basic glue gun is sufficient but you will need quite a few glue stick. The backing strip sticks quite well as it is self adhesive. The end result is very satisfactory but not as good as professional binding
